Great Britain destroyed their rivals, to take a dominant gold medal in the women’s team pursuit in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands.
Women’s Team Pursuit
The team of Wendy Houvenaghel, Laura Trott and Danielle King demolished the United States, by almost two seconds. The result is proved all the better, considering Trott and King were making their Elite debuts at World level. New Zealand took their first medal of the championships, by beating Australia in to third. The slow track at Apeldoorn has caught a few people out, but the British team made sure they were perfectly honed for it and it showed.
Women’s Team Sprint
Britain weren’t able to make it a double as they were beaten by half a second, by a very strong Australian team. Anna Meares and Kaarle McCoulloch have looked unbeatable all season and the victory meant the third in the row, for the pair. Second fell to sprint queen Victoria Pendleton and Jess Varnish. European champions, France couldn’t even manage a podium position, as they were beaten by a slim margin to China.
Men’s individual Pursuit
The Australians dominated this event taking first, third and fourth, with Jack Bobridge claiming his second medal of the championship. Bobridge was ahead from the off, taking two seconds out of second place Jesse Sergent. He lost some time towards the end, but still won in convincing style, ahead of the Kiwi. Michael Hepburn rounded off the podium with compatriot Rohan Dennis finishing in first.
