The Le Col team of Franco Marvulli, Andy Fenn and Jon Mould took victory in the highly anticipated three-man Madison at Revolution 30 on Sunday 21st November 2010.
Six-day veteran Marvulli produced a brilliant final sprint to give him and his young teammates a hard fought win in the 80 lap event. Close behind were the Max Gear Racing team of Adam Yates, Simon Yates and Leif Lampater, who had been ahead for much of the race, but finished two points behind. The three-man Madison has been a common occurrence during the hugely popular six-day events, but it is the first time it’s happened at the Revolution.
Marvulli and Fenn had been in action earlier on in the evening’s other Madison event with the 1km time-trial. The pair greeted success again with a time of 58.334 seconds finishing less than two tenths ahead of, commonwealth time-trial silver medallist, Alex Dowsett and Alex Rasmussen. Team Sky riders Geraint Thomas and Ben Swift were favourites for the win but only managed fourth in the end.
Devil Takes the Hindmost
To open the night the crowds were greeted with the relentless 24-lap Devil-scratch race combined. It wasn’t for the faint hearted as Marvulli, Rasmussen, Dowsett and Steven Burke were left to lick their wounds early on. In the end Ben Swift crossed the line first helped by fellow Sky rider Peter Kennaugh, who had fallen off during the race.
Before he hit the track Argentine six-day rider Sebastian Doniado turned x-factor and treated the fans to a rendition of Angels sung by Robbie Williams. However, he wasn’t distracted by the performance and went on to win the 15km points race with one more sprint to go. It was a bit of an anti-climax as a seven-man bunch got away taking up all the remaining points.
DHL Future Stars
As ever the DHL future star series allowed the crowd to see some of the up and coming riders strut their stuff. The boys were the first out of the blocks with the 200 metre sprint and it was Matt Rotherham who set his stall out in the debut sprint competition. He started off the evening two points behind Future Stars leader Sam Lowe.
Lowe fought back in the next 5km scratch race event with second place but another one of his close rivals Harry Tanfield pipped him to the line. With one lap left to go Lowe launched what looked to be a race winning attack, but Tanfield didn’t give up and caught him with metres to go. The tit for tat competition didn’t stop there as Lowe went on to claim the six lap dash ahead of Tanfield. It was business as usual in the devil, but Rotherham showed his sprinting prowess yet again in the kerin proving to be one to watch.
The girls also put on a good show as table leader Emily Kay produced a tactically brilliant ride to win the devil beating Amy Roberts of the Le Col team to the line. Kay seemed unbeatable yet again when she rode a perfect scratch race leaving Roberts bet of the rest for a second time in a row. Jess Crampton, no relation to Matt, showed that Kay is in fact human by scraping in head of her in the six-lap dash. Kay and Lowe retain their jerseys for the third event of the winter at the Revolution 31 on December 11th.
