Wouter Weylandt Dies after Giro Crash

Cycling is in mourning today after the sad news of Wouter Weylandt’s death, during the third stage of the Giro D’Italia.

The Leopard-Trek rider fell on the decent of the Passo del Bocco, just 25 km from the finish in Rapallo. It is unsure what caused the accident, but early reports indicate one of his pedals jammed and stopped him from releasing himself. Medical staff tried to resuscitate Weylandt, who was lying motionless on the ground, for 40 minutes, but were not able to. The few television pictures showed blood coming from the Belgian’s head, while he received cardiac massage.

A year ago Weylandt won the third stage, on his Giro D’Italia debut and joined the Schlecks’ team at the start of this year. His Leopard-Trek team released this statement: "Today, our team mate and friend Wouter Weylandt passed away after a crash on the third stage of the Giro d'Italia.

"The team is left in a state of shock and sadness and we send all our thoughts and deepest condolences to the family and friends of Wouter. This is a difficult day for cycling and for our team, and we should all seek support and strength in the people close to us." Cyclists and team members have been sending out their tributes, since the terrible news was announced.

Organisers chose to cancel the award ceremony, following the stage, won by Spain’s Angel Vicioso. David Millar took over the pink jersey, while previous leader Mark Cavendish lost time and had to relinquish it.
